Glaucous Gull has a circumpolar distribution and is a rare visitor to the Iberian Peninsula during the winter months, especially in the Cantabrian and Galician coast, in this region is a regular wintering visitor, but always in small numbers. Almost all birds that reach the Iberia Peninsula are young birds or so-called first winter.
Here some pictures taking over recent years in Galicia and the Cantabrian coast.

This picture of a first winter Glaucous Gull was the most excited picture that I took of this specie, because I saw him in Colmenar Viejo, Madrid. I remember it was a foggy day and I could not believe I was seeing a Glaucous Gull in Madrid.

I dedicate this entry to Glaucus Gull. Every year we can see some birds in Cantabrian and Atlantic coasts of Spain, but this winter most likely have broken every record of sighting of this species, in some Galicia places people sighted more than 6 bird at the same time. This massive influx I believe was due to the continues Atlantic storms during January and February. If this was the main reason, many of these birds provably come from breeding areas of Canadian Arctic and Greenland.

In Madrid there is only one record in winter 2010.
